Why Drinking Enough Water Is So Important When Trying To Lose Weight

September 9, 2009

Most people would be surprised to learn that one of the most important aspects of a weight loss program is water rather than food.
Studies suggest that as many as 75% of people are seriously dehydrated. When the body is thirsty it sends a message to the brain requesting an intake of water. Unfortunately this is very similar to the signal that requests food, so many people snack when what their bodies really need is a drink; not exactly helpful if you are trying to achieve weight loss.
So how much water should you drink? If you are average weight you need to take in 8 glasses of water, each glass holding 8 fl oz. If you are carrying more weight then add one glass of water for each 25 pounds of extra weight.
You need water, not any old fluid. Cups of tea or (caffeinated) coffee do not count towards this total need, as both are diuretics and actually rob the body of water. In fact for each cup of tea you drink, you need another cup of water!
So what role does water play in your diet that means it is so important?
- Water suppresses the appetite – remember about the conflicting signals received by your brain asking for a drink or food. A lack of water means your kidneys will not function correctly resulting in an increase of fat being stored, and some of the kidney’s duties are passed to the liver resulting in that organ metabolizing less fat into energy.
- Insufficient water will often result in constipation.
- When your body receives insufficient water it tends to store some, resulting in an increase in your weight. Women in particular often have a water retention problem. If you have such a problem drink more water. Then your body will not feel the need to retain water leading to a reduction in your weight.
- Not enough water can result in kidney damage. Your kidneys remove lactic acid, uric acid, and urea from your body; a vital function.
- Your chances of contracting various cancers including breast cancer, colon cancer, and cancer of the bladder are reduced by drinking water.
