The vegan diet consists mainly of all organic plant material. Being a vegan is more than a way of eating, it is also a lifestyle. Vegans do not consume anything with animal products in it. They also don’t use anything that could be made from animals, including clothes, beverages and cosmetics.

Many people turn to a vegan diet for moral and ethical reasons. Their main concern is the treatment of the animals that are being raised and processed for their food. This is not the only reason for veganism, however. Some people become vegans for spiritual or religious reasons, but the main reason is factory farming and animal testing.

A vegan follows a much stricter path than a vegetarian. A vegetarian consumes animal products like eggs, cheese and milk, but they do not eat the animal’s meat. Also, unlike the vegan, they may also use animal products, such as make-up, that contains animal fat. The vegan has a far more dedicated lifestyle.

While the vegan diet lacks in many important vitamins and nutrients, it is still a relatively healthy lifestyle if maintained properly. Vegans who properly plan and execute their diets can satisfy essential nutrient needs. Meats contain many vitamins that the body needs to survive, but there are other options.

Lower calcium levels, lack of vitamins like B & D and iodine are big concerns for vegans. The best way to replace these essential nutrients is to take a supplement. But not all supplements are the same as some contain animal byproducts. To avoid this, it is important to read the label and do your homework so you know what you are consuming.

Some studies have shown that in some cases among adolescents veganism can be used to mask eating disorders. They do not, however, state that veganism leads to eating disorders. It is suggested that in the cases of a youth deciding on a vegan diet, it is important for the parents to be involved fully the entire time. It is important to know what your children are eating and what they are not eating.

There are similar diets such as raw veganism and fruitarianism. Raw veganism consists of a diet with no animal products, such as the traditional vegan, but they also don’t eat foods cooked above one hundred eighteen degrees Fahrenheit. The diet consists of raw nuts, fruits and vegetables, herbs and fruit juices. However, sometimes the vegan whose diet consists of at least seventy-five percent raw products is considered a raw vegan.

One of the smallest niche groups of veganism are those who follow a fruitarianism diet. As the name gives away, the most consumed material is fruit. Along with nuts, seeds, grains and vegetables, fruit is the most substantial ingredient in this diet. Not unlike raw vegans, people who eat at least seventy-five percent or more are thought to be fruitarians.

While these smaller niche groups follow the principals of veganism, they don’t contain the same dietary health benefits. A properly maintained low fat vegan diet can improve health greatly. Many other countries already implement healthy vegan diets or vegan inspired diets. Many East Asian diets contain seitan, tofu and tempeh, which are all used in veganism. Now, cow milk is being replaced with soy and applesauce is being used as a starch in cooking instead of eggs. With so many varieties now, being a vegan is tastier than ever.
