Getting Overwieght Kids Active at Home: Lessons from Weight Loss Camps

One reason places that use to be called “fat camps” are so effective in helping kids lose weight is the activity level required of participants. Kids won’t sit around playing video games for hours at weight loss fitness camp. They won’t veg out on the couch watching TV all day either. Activities are designed to make children want to get up and be active so they don’t miss out on the fun.

It’s not uncommon for adults to cringe when the word exercise is mentioned so how do you expect children to react to it? Overweight children cannot easily touch their toes or do sit-ups/pushups. The extra weight being carried around causes them to feel awkward and clumsy. How many people feel comfortable doing something that doesn’t put them at ease?

Camps should all employ counselors which are good at motivating children. Daily activities include structured competitions, swimming time, hikes, and several other fun games that double as forms of exercise. The kids are also encouraged to walk to and from the activities at weight loss camp to keep the kids active.

At home, parents can do quite a bit to help their overweight kids but simply telling them to exercise is not enough. Why not exercise with him by taking long walks or hike small hills in your area? There are many venues where walking is a requirement – a State Fair, a zoo, or one of the many indoor play areas designed for children. Don’t rent a power boat – rent a canoe or kayak for a day trip.

Of course, none of this works if your child is not interested in any of the activities that you attempt to get them involved in. Thus, it becomes important to find out what they are interested in. There are lots of different museums for different things, these are normally free to visit and you will have to do a lot of walking to get around. You can take a picnic to a scenic location for a nice day out, doing this will encourage children to get out and walk. Young children can have fun exploring new areas and older kids can run around and play some games.

If you can afford it and your child has been asking, consider a dog for your household. Make sure that the dog has its shots and has had obedience training, is house trained and wants a friend too. Make sure to add a stipulation that the child must walk the dog twice a day. Most children, however, will play with their canine friend all their own.

When a child’s imagination and mind are occupied, he doesn’t notice he’s also getting valuable exercise.

Weight loss camps are aimed at providing all sorts of activities which make children much more active. These summer weight loss camp should help to change a child’s life for the better and make them lead a much more active lifestyle. Even when your child leaves the teen weight loss camp they can continue to lead a healthy lifestyle.
